Paying more money just makes it more refined and exclusive. Yes there is carbon (and your paying for the quality control, not the material) and fancy technologies, but honestly most products look the same because it's what universally works. Still has a carbon fork on it for comfort, but be realistic, road bikes are not build to be comfy cruisers no matter how expensive.

Slow down and stop drinking the coolaid, you have already bought into the marketing hype! You said you've only recently started getting into this and you have really only done research? There is nothing wrong with a 900 dollar Claris build with rim pull brakes. A good aluminium bicycle will serve you well for most recreational riding and cost much less. So yeah, it's a lot to pay for some carbon fiber tubes and wheels, but the good news is unless you're into serious, long distance competitive riding those 4-5 digit price tags aren't necessary. It's a bit like the stereotype of golfers bring upper class types. This constant race to save weight leads to higher development costs.ģ) Most road bikers have money to throw around. This leads me to my next point.Ģ) Bike manufacturers compete by coming up with creative ways to shave off grams of weight and tiny amounts of drag. This is a relatively small market within the industry, so economies of scale can't work their magic on production cost. This is a bit of a hand wave so let me break it down.ġ) You're looking at high end road/triathlon bikes based on the info in your post. Anecdotally, it comes down to the fact that shops can charge what people will pay and production costs are relatively high. And it seems to me that it is just accepted now, that a quality bicycle costs 1000s of dollars. This industry must be making ridiculous profits on some these mid to high end bicycles. I can already predict some people will say it's a niche market and very few are produced, not buying it. Forget those, even comparing to motorcycles which are WAY more complex and have a ridiculous amount of technology in them.I saw bikes costing more than motorcycles, BIKES with just metal components and chains and a frame. Some things just don't make sense, like the fact that there are electrical bicycles which are far more complex and go way faster yet they still cost much less than some of these high end carbon fiber/wood bikes. I know a lot now.īUT there is NO justification for why a bicycle costs so much. Learned about bike fitting and its importance. Researched a lot about wheels, bearings, and tires. Read up on frame materials (steel, wood, titanium, aluminum, and carbon fiber). Read up on shimano components and learned the hierarchy (sora, tiagra, 105, ultegra, dura ace). Started doing research online, with a focus on road bikes. Saw bikes ranging from $1300-$13,000 at my local bike shop. Long story short, mind blown by how much bikes cost.
